Dr. Gasparis talks IVC filters, retrievals, and protocols for follow-up care

We recently reached out to Dr. Antonios Gasparis, professor of surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York, to learn more about his hospital’s venous thromboembolism (VTE) team. Upon its formation, the team was tasked with managing patients who have received IVC filters, including tracking eligible patients for outpatient follow-up and filter retrieval. Following is Dr. Gasparis’ description of the roles of the VTE team, results of protocol implementation, and suggestions for physicians who would like to create a similar program at their facility. Leg Ulcer W/ Multiple Sources Of Reflux

A 50 year old male with long-standing bilateral chronic venous insufficiency presented with right leg ulceration.


  • Aching and heavy lower limbs
  • Symptoms get worse with prolonged standing
  • He feels better with lower limb elevation and compression stocking therapy


What should be done?

Post-procedure Thrombophlebitis


A 46 year old female presented with long-standing history of right lower limb fatigue and aching with prolonged standing.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Aching, cramping, heavy, tired right lower limb
  • Tenderness over bulging veins
  • Symptoms get worse at end of the day
  • She feels better with lower limb elevation and application of elastic compression stockings (ECS)

The veins are larger and the symptoms are worst at the end of the day. She gets relief with limb elevation.

The left lower limb is asymptomatic with spider and reticular veins that do not bother her.
